As my husband and I are now empty nesters- with our children in school and beginning their own lives-we have come to see a new phenomenon in our community . . . an epidemic of divorce among our empty nester friends.  Apparently, Aventura is not alone.  Nationally, the divorce rate among people over 50 has jumped from 1 in 10 in 1990 to 1 in 4 in 2009.  Even more curious is that more than 66% of the time, it is the wife filing for the divorce.  Sociologists offer explanations ranging from the new financial independence of women to baby boomers different view of the purpose of marriage.

I decided to write an article about this alarming trend and am looking to the momsaventura membership for help.  If you have any opinions or insights about this trend, please feel free to post.

If you know anyone who divorced over 50, is going through a divorce now, or is contemplating a divorce and is over 50 can you share the reasons they are seeking divorce at this time in their lives.  Please do not post any names, or any detailed information that may identify someone.  If you prefer, email me at dtamir@thefairdivorce.com and I will only use what you are comfortable with.

As always, if you know someone contemplating divorce, please urge them to consider pre-suit (before the law suit is filed) pro-se (no lawyers) mediation to save time, money, and their post divorce relationships with spouse and children.  For more information about mediation as an alternative to expensive litigation click here.
